Today, let's talk about the state of our nation, Nigeria.

Our text is from 1st Cor 6:9-11 “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

I was reading, on the internet, the story of a senior secondary school boy, who led a robbery gang to steal a SUV. After they were arrested, the boy said he decided to go into robbery because he thinks that wealth is not evenly distributed in Nigeria. He said that he couldn’t afford the final exam fee and was told to repeat his class as a result of this. He then decided within himself that he will rob the rich and not the poor.

What a story. And that reminds me of the state of our nation today. In spite of our human and natural resources, Nigeria is sitting on the brink of destruction. And it is not because we don’t have money or wealth, it is because we have lost our values. There is destruction of values that has happened in our country, mostly in the last two decades. It is a massive destruction of our value system. Unfortunately if you don’t have values, you will lack value.

For example, the war against corruption is needed, but we may not win this war if corruption is not addressed from its roots. A corrupt political system cannot correct itself. The church has a lot to do in addressing this corruption, because our corruption is spiritual in origin.

Sin is a nature. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he. When we talk about the human heart, we have to appreciate its capacity for creating extreme beauty and horrific destruction, at the same time.

Jer 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

The average person is not being honest enough to confront the realities of our hearts. It takes time before we are confronted with the capacity of our hearts to invent evil. This does not apply only to the people outside the church, but also to the people within the church. We have to accept the capacity of the human heart to mess up. This capacity of the heart to mess up is revealed when we take God out of the place he reserved from himself in our hearts, and we replace Him with ourselves. This is when we discover the powerful tendency to go completely out of course.

The reason why we reject God is because we are not comfortable with Him being in full control of our lives. We push God out and take absolute control. The result is in Romans 1:20-32 – “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four- footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil- mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

Man has the capacity to create evil things when He takes God out of his life. When I look at the above scripture, it reminds me of the story of our country. Some things done by our citizens have baffled countries all over the world. The creativity and ingenuity that has been introduced into fraud, scam, and corruption is just supernatural. The fulfilment that God is to give a human being, when He is taken out, such depths of peace and joy elude us. We then have to invent alternatives.

That is the foundation of our problems today.
