Our text: 1st King 17:1-16

Our text is quite long so I won’t bother typing it. Elijah made a pronouncement of drought on the land which has led to famine (Please read the previous chapter as well to get the background).

God gave Elijah a word with a strategy to get blessed in the midst of the famine, “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.

Now, it is interesting the channel that God chose to bring food to Elijah. Verse 6 of our text says, The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook. A raven is a very stingy bird. Study shows that it will not even give its own children food. God could have sent angels to minister to him; but he chose to show that he can serve his own purposes by the meanest creatures. This is the bird that God used to bless Elijah. God’s blessings come through unexpected channels. When we have been through hell and high water, and think all possible routes have become dead ends, he creates a new route out of nothing.

Elijah fed fat on the supplies of the ravens and was having a time of his life, but all of a sudden, the brook dried up and the ravens stopped coming. This means there is no more food for the prophet. Elijah did what many of us forget to do whenever we hit a brick wall in our lives: he sought God again to hear the word for ‘now.’  Yes it was God that told him to go to the brook, but HE has already said something else: "Arise, go to Zarephath…

Friends it is important to constantly hear from God. HE told Abraham, “Go and sacrifice Isaac,” but just at the point of execution, he said “Stop, use the ram instead.” Assuming Abraham heard God the first time, but didn’t hear him the second time. He would have killed Isaac and argued that God told him to do so. And to some extent, he would have been right because he actually heard God the first time.

Sometimes, God can take you to a brook called Cherith and make it dry up after some time. Why? He doesn’t want us to idolize the channels He has used to bless us (e.g. Our Jobs, career, talent etc.). Other times because there is a widow that needs to be blessed. The brook made him blessed, but God wanted to make him a blessing, because the ultimate aim of a blessed man is to be a blessing.

Friends, let us learn the importance of hearing from God constantly from our text above. I will post the part 2 of this at a later. This will focus on what happened at the widow’s place.

Points to ponder:

  • Your problem is not the end, it is only a bend.

  • It is important to hear God always.

Hope you were blessed. Kindly drop your comments below. Thank you.
