The dangers of ‘plan B’ emotions

We shall take our text from Romans 14:17 - “for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

We humans are emotional beings. It is our emotions that make us to feel alive. We get motivated and active through our emotions.

Our outward behoviour takes its root in a thought, an idea, an image in our minds. You cannot change your character without changing your thinking pattern. This post is about learning how to engage the power of God in changing our thinking pattern.

Ephesians 5:18 - "And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit."

Our emotions can be sourced from two dimensions. When God is not given His place in our lives, we find different ways to create satisfactory feelings in ourselves. When we take God out, we replace him with self, and to make that self happy, we invent things. Sometimes we relish the experience of eating food. We get feelings from taking certain drinks, from soda to alcohol, and even energy drinks. We get feelings from sex. We get feelings from substances like marijuana, cocaine and so on. But when we get feelings from certain sources outside God, even though we might get the satisfaction or joy we seek (which ofcourse is temporary), unfortunately we must go back to those activities or substances to get those feelings again. With time, the impact of those substances weigh so we must get more. If it was one glass of alcohol that used to do the magic, you will have to increase it to two to sustain that level of feeling. Ultimately, we are pushed to the point of addiction, and at that point, that substance has a grip on our lives, and then it leads to destruction.

However, if it is the spirit of God that is the source of our emotions, He makes us better persons over time. He gives us power over negative emotions.

In Galatians 5, there two lists. The first one from verses 19-21 shows the end results of seeking feelings and emotions from the wrong sources.

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are:adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Verses 22 and 23 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self- control. Against such there is no law.” The Spirit of God is the one who has the capacity to empower us. He delivers us from these negative emotions. He births in us the emotions that God himself feels. Those are the kind of emotions we want to see in a person of character. A person whose life is patterned after that of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When the Holy Spirit comes into someone’s life, He breaks the power of negative emotions over our lives (Isaiah 61:1-3). Addiction to sex, envy, jealousy, lies are all examples of negative emotions. When the Holy Spirit is not in someone’s life, another person’s success becomes a threat to him, anger becomes a defence mechanism.

How does the Holy Spirit accomplish this? Let me share something I learnt from my Pastor, Rev. Sam Adeyemi:

Your self-esteem is built on your self-image. Whatever that image is, will dictate your feelings and emotions. Negative circumstances, rejection, deprivation, lack of love, abuse and brutality we have experienced in our lives shapen or self-image. Words spoken to us by authority figures shapen the images of ourselves on the inside. Some people did not experience the love of a parent or a spouse.

What that does is to create in us fear and insecurity. So when they relate with other people and they show those tendencies, that is when they spring up a defence mechanism. The reason why we fight, quarrel, why we can experience hatred is because we don’t want someone to cheat us. Maybe someone is trying to behave the way somebody behaved to us in the past.

When someone is addicted to, or has a craving for sex, for example, the root may be in the fact that the person did not experience affection somewhere in the past. At the root of every emotion is a thought or a picture.

When the Holy Spirit wants to transform us, He goes into those roots, and deal with the pictures. He gives you a revelation of who you are and how God sees you so that you can change how you see yourself. The foundational revelation that everyone must get from the Spirit of God is the fact that GOD LOVES YOU. We need to repeat it to ourselves over and over again, GOD LOVES ME (1st John 3:16). It is our not feeling loved that makes us threatened. We tend to over-value the love and approval of human beings.

What people think about you hardly matters, it is just their opinion. What God thinks about you is what matters the most. There is no perfect person anywhere. God accepts us the way we are. Ephesians 1:4 says, “We are accepted in the beloved.” If Jehovah God accepts me the way I am, who has the right to disqualify me? Who can separate me from the love of God? If God is for me, who can be against me?

We have to learn not to use our circumstances to define who we are. You may have a failed in some areas in life, but that does not make you a failure. You are the apple of God’s eye, Jesus died on your behalf. You are not a worthless person. You are a peculiar person, a holy generation, and a royal priesthood, special in God’s eye. If you think what God thinks about you, God’s power will flow through your life. Learn to see yourself the way God sees you and you won’t have to seek for emotional fulfilment in the wrong places. When Jesus is your life, you are not helpless, you are not incompetent, you are not a failure.

Confession:

I can make it,
I will make,
I will fulfil my destiny,
God will convert my mistakes into miracles.

When those negative emotions want to overwhelm you, when you are tempted to smoke that indian hemp, when you want to give in to pre-marital sex or just when you are about to drink yourself to stupor, ask the Holy Spirit for help and get high in the Lord.

God bless you.
