Our text: Genesis 1:1-5 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. (NKJV)

Time is a part of eternity that God has set aside for the use of man. As we are already in the middle of 2017, it means that God is giving us more time out of eternity. From our text, in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Then something happened to the earth, and it became without form and void.

One interesting thing about it is that, even though the earth changed, God didn’t, and heaven didn’t. It was the earth that changed and we come from the earth, that is why we are subject to change.

When change occurred on the earth, God did certain things to remedy the situation. The bible says when God saw that a change had occurred, some things began to happen. The first move was the Holy Ghost. Verse 2 says, “…and the Spirit of God moved…

Something changed in the physical; the earth is a physical place, and it changed physically. But when God wanted to restore it, He started with something that is not physical. The earth is visible but the Holy Ghost is invisible.

It was the Spirit of the Lord that moved first, that is why your enemies will never know what God is doing. They will be waiting to see things happen physically, but the bible says that you are born of the Spirit. The things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal.

It was the Spirit of the Lord that moved first. That is why sometimes it is hard to understand the ways of a spirit-filled man. He might be in the midst of a chaos, but he is calm and his actions do not reflect his present situation.

It is worthy to note that it didn’t say the Spirit of the Lord moved inside…it says the Spirit of the Lord moved OVER. That signifies position. When you move over something, it means you are higher than that thing. There is no problem or situation that the spirit of the Lord is not greater than. So no matter what the enemy throws at you, it will come under the control of the Holy Spirit. Since you are born of the Spirit, you are an overcomer.

When the Spirit of the Lord had moved, God gave a command, “Let there be light.” So after the Spirit, came the Word. When the spirit moved, it was invisible, but when the Word came, it created manifestation.  Instantly what God said came to existence, “…and there was light.” The bible says “the word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword.” As Christians, one of the weapons we have to fight this warfare is the WORD. We must cultivate an habit of using the word of God to change the situations we do not agree with in our lives.

When the light came, through the Spirit and the Word, God saw that it was good.

Now the reason why light had to come was so that time could begin. Without light, there would be no season, without light, there would be no time. When one is in darkness, he will stagnate, he will have no concept of time.

When light separated itself from darkness, it was called day 1, when it separated itself from darkness again, it was called day 2…and so on. Light is the reason for time and existence. What the Devil is trying to do to you is to still your time by outing you in darkness.

So when God is set to restore you, He brings light and when light comes, your day begins to dawn.

Points to ponder:
  • When there was chaos on the earth, God did not complain about the darkness, He spoke his expectation; “Let there be light.” Don't tell God how big your problem is, tell your problem how big your GOD is.

  • God did not open His mouth to speak until the Spirit moved.

  • Light up your life with the Spirit and the Word.

  • Learn to shapen your world through the word.
