This is the second part of our last post. Our text is from John 10:2-5.

In our text, Jesus talks about the Sheppard, “…to him the potter openeth, and the sheep hear his voice…” If you are God’s sheep, you have been designed to hear his voice. Hearing his voice is the foundation to your Christian life. Going to church, singing and dancing, lifting up holy hands, etc are all secondary to hearing His voice. You can hardly move beyond your ability to recognize His voice. Verse 5 of our text says, “…and a stranger will they not follow, and will flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers.

While we are training ourselves to hear from God, we must be careful what we hear. 1st Cor 14:10 KJV says, “And there many voices, and none of them is without significance.

We live in challenging days for the believer. There is bombardment of information from every direction. There is a voice of your own mind, you have the voice of your relatives and friends telling you to get married because every other person is doing so. There is a voice that sounds from the newspapers and magazines that you read. A voice is sounding from the internet. But thank God our text says, “…and a stranger will they not follow, and will flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers.

Your maturity as a believer is measured by how much you can hear from God with accuracy. The bible says in Hebrews chapter 5 – Some people, by reason of use, have their sense exercise to distinguish between good and evil(emphasis mine). So hearing from God does not only come by prayer, it comes by reason of use.  For example, having known my wife for some years, if you put her in the next room containing 100 people, when she talks, I can recognize her voice. I will tell you that is the voice of my wife. That is what the bible is saying. Our level of accuracy is directly proportional to our practice of hearing from Him.

We have to start from little things. The only time some Christians really seek to hear from God is when they want to get married(You mustn’t miss that anyway). Why don’t we learn how to ask God if it’s going to rain today so that we can go out with the umbrella. When you do that, sometimes you will miss it, and sometimes you will get it. But your senses are being sharpened. When you get the ones that work for you, it will let you know how God talks.

There are times you will say, “God told me...,” only to discover after a while that he doesn’t even talk like that at all. It reminds me of the story of a brother in church who was convinced that God has showed him his wife. He approached this sister and told her, “God said you are the one I’ll marry, let us not disobey Him.” The sister smiled and sarcastically replied, “When I get home, I’ll discuss it with my husband because I’m married already.” Imagine the embarrassment. This funny example is a part of the learning process. The next time this brother thinks God is speaking to him, he will relax and think twice.

I will post the concluding part of this topic soon. Meanwhile kindly share your thoughts in the comment section.

God bless you.
