When faith suspends the rules

Our text:

Mat 10:5  These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying:" Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans.

Mat 15:21-28   Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon- possessed."

23 But He answered her not a word.

And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, "Send her away, for she cries out after us."

24 But He answered and said, " I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, help me!"

26 But He answered and said, " It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."

27 And she said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, " O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

This is a very interesting story of a Canaanite woman who needed a healing for her daughter. Unfortunately He met this woman around the “region of the gentiles” that Jesus warned His disciples against in Matthew 10:5.

In verse 23 of Matthew 15, He answered her not a word. This is quite unusual of Jesus to be bombarded by faith, and not say a word.

If Jesus should deal with this woman, he would be doing what He told his disciples not to do. He told them, “Go to the lost sheep of the house of the Israel.” He added, “DO NOT ENTER THE HOUSE OF THE GENTILES.” And here was Jesus caught up in a dilemma.

Jesus was having the problem in our text, not because of the woman’s faith, because she was holding on to what she wanted him to do for her, but it is possible that Jesus was caught between his humanity and his divinity as to the will of His father.

Jesus must have been thinking to himself, “What should I do with this woman? After all I am not sent to an outsider, but I’m sent to the household of Israel.”

Now it might be the woman’s first time in Jerusalem, but there is something about faith that identifies where the blessing is. And when she saw Jesus, something in her spirit must have said to her, “Here is your blessing, get it while it’s near.” Then she began to shout and scream, “Son of David, have mercy on me.”

Sometimes we do not need to sit still and act like we got it all together, when our soul is crying out for something, when our soul has a need. We all have needs. There are needs that will make us take off our pride and crush it at the feet of Jesus. And this woman continued shouting without minding who was looking.

She was loud but she was worshipful. She addressed Him as LORD, and even eulogized Him, “Thou son of David.” The woman spoke to Jesus as the Messiah. Then she told Him her need with a cry: “My daughter is severely demon- possessed."

Now here is a cry that challenges Jesus’ mission.

We have to understand that this text teaches us that there are times when faith can cause a collision between vertical truth and horizontal truth. Here is a collision between the truth of the competence of faith, and the truth of Jesus’ mission only to Israel.

Now Jesus was in a war because He had already told His disciples what not to do. He was standing there knowing He had to act because the woman was arguing from the platform of faith.

The disciples were telling Jesus, “Send her away.” The woman was telling Him, “Help me.” He didn’t answer either of them, but was just talking to himself trying to figure out how to change the rules in other to help her through.

He kept quiet and began to walk, she began to scream the more (Sometimes when the Lord seems quiet and far away, it is time for us to pray more).

And when Jesus would finally speak, it wasn’t something encouraging, “It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs.

Sometimes when we make a request to heaven without a ‘favourable’ result, our spirit dampens and we tend to give up. This text teaches us not to. This woman knew that Jesus was the key to her breakthrough and she was ready to pray until something happens. She replied, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

Suddenly, Jesus did something He warned His disciples not to do and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire." And the bible recorded that her daughter was healed from that very hour.

While you are praying, praising and shouting His name in faith, He will find a way to suspend all the rules to bless you.

Halleluyah!

Points to ponder:

  • When you don’t hear a word, keep on praising.

  • Pray Until Something Happens (PUSH).

  • Faith suspends the rules.
