Change your thoughts, change your life

Man thinking

One of the ways you can hurt yourself is with wrong thoughts and of course one of the ways you can help yourself is with right thoughts. Romans 12 best describes it as clearly as any scripture that we're ever going to find.

If we have been studying the Word of God for a long time, we must have read Romans 12 many times but we're going to go over it again.

Romans 12:2 (AMP)

Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].

If you ever desire to be changed, here is how that change takes place; by the entire renewal of your mind. In other words, if you don't ever change your mind you're not ever going to change your life. If you don't ever change your mind you're not going to change. it's really quite amazing how much our thoughts are connected to everything else that happens in our lives.

proverbs 23:7

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.

Where the mind goes, the man follows. If you think something is too much for you and it's too hard, you'll get yourself convinced that you can't do it. On the other hand if you would have can-do thinking (I can do this through Christ who strengthens me. It's not too much for me because God's Spirit lives in me. God's never going to give me more to do than what I can bear. He'll help me do it), then you'll be able to do what you just talked yourself out of a few minutes ago. And it had nothing to do with anything other than the way you decided to think about it.

God's got a new life for you. The Bible says that we are to get renewed thinking so that we might prove for ourselves what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect in his sight for you now.

Ephesians 4 says something else that we need to see. It tells us how often we have to renew our minds. Is it just a one-time thing or is it something that has to be done on a regular basis?

Ephesians 4:23 says and be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude. And then the next verse says, and put on the new nature. The Bible says if any man be in Christ he is a new creature. We have a new nature. God has been planted on the inside of us but just because you have it doesn't mean you are it. To put on the new nature you have to change your thinking. For example don't lay in bed in the morning and just think about yourself, how you can get your way that day and what everybody can do for you and how mad you are at everybody who's not doing everything you want.

Before you are fully awake in the morning, the enemy would attempt to inject thoughts into your mind about what people weren't doing for you, everything that was wrong with you, and what could you do to get people to do what you wanted them to. The danger about that kind of thinking is always connected to unhappiness. it's connected to depression. it's connected to discouragement. Narrow thinking gives you a narrow life but God has a large free wonderful full abundant life for you, but in order to live in it you're going to have to change your thinking, and guess what; you can do it.

As a matter of fact, nobody can do it but you. I can't change your mind for you. You have to change your mind. You can choose what you want to think about and you need to do it and you need to do it very carefully. One of the greatest breakthroughs for a child of God is knowing that he can wake up in the morning and instead of thinking about himself, he could actually lay there and talk to God and say “my god, what can I do for somebody else today.”

Point to ponder:

If you sow, a thought, you reap an action. If you sow an action, you reap an habit, if you sow an habit, you reap a character. But what happens when you sow a character? You reap a destiny. But always remember that everything started with a thought.
