It was a wonderful time in the presence of God on Sunday as my pastor talked about recognizing opportunities. Everyday in our lives, we walk past many opportunities without even recognizing them. Sometimes we do recognize them, but are complacent (thinking that it will happen again), and other times, we are just too comfortable where we are to act on or leverage on the opportunity.

I will be sharing some of things discussed on Sunday. Our text is from

Heb 11:15-16 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Opportunity can be defined as a situation or condition favorable for attainment of a goal. It can also be defined as a good position, chance, or prospect, as for advancement or success.

Some of the reasons why we don’t utilise opportunities are:

1. We don’t recognise it
2. We are complacent
3. We misuse it.

Of all the above reasons, recognizing opportunities is the most common. Our perception of things and life in general determines whether we can recognize opportunities when they appear to us. While some people complain that there are thorns in the midst of roses, others are thankful that there are roses in the midst of thorns. A glass with 50% water is half-filled to someone but half-empty to another.

Some see life in terms of problems, others see life in terms of solutions. Some see life in terms of fullness, others see life in terms of emptiness.

Seeing life with a positive outlook is an important requirement for recognising opportunities: Mark 9:23 says Jesus said to him,“If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

So believing or faith brings you to the place of opportunity.  2nd Cor 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

We gather from our text that your life can only be filled with the future or the past. It is the one that is dominant that controls your life.

We are so conditioned to our “normal” lives that when we find ourselves in unfamiliar places, we start longing for where we have left. Just like the children of Israel, after they have been delivered,  their minds were so conditioned that they were longing to go back to captivity. Their minds were so conditioned to the captivity that they would not mind going back to the meal of garlic they had daily as slaves.

So, how do we start the habit of recognizing opportunities?

  1. Having a “dangerous faith” is the first key. 2nd Cor 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

  2. Preparation. Success is birthed when opportunity meets with preparedness.

  3. Motive. If you have not submitted yourself to the Holy Spirit to develop self control and character, then the Devil will provide opportunities for failure. These types of opportunities are called temptation.

  4. Skills. Sharpen your skills. Skill development helps. A trained fashion designer will be the first to recognise a missing button. A skilled mechanic is more likely to tell the fault of a car from its sound and so on.

  5. We need to be flexible for us to recognize opportunities. We must get rid of bias or prejudice. A woman may say “all men are the same.” How many men has she met in her life? When her husband therefore passes by, she won’t recognise him because of prejudice.

A lot of the time when opportunities come, they won’t look like the things we have seen before. Get ready and be opened to exploration. To explore, you need to take risks. You will need to meet people you have never met before for you to experience new level of success. You need to do the things you have never done before.

Be bold, have faith, be positive.

Sure you were blessed. Kindly drop your comments below.
